Kirby Memorial to present encore of 'The Witness'
Although he took his last steps on Earth more than 2,000 years ago, his story lives on in the hearts and minds of millions of people today.
The story will have an encore performance Sunday at Kirby Memorial Baptist Church, which will present The Witness 2007, a modern day musical drama portraying the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.
The play received rave reviews when it was initially performed in March and April. A tidal wave of support helped convince church leaders to schedule another show.
"We had 800 people in attendance at all three of our prior shows," Larry Lawson, Kirby Memorial Baptist Church worship pastor said. "There were so many people who got to see the play, but so many more who were not able to see it."
The drama takes a modern look at the love of Christ in the daily lives of human beings. With subject matter in the play for all age groups, Lawson believes there is something for the whole family to enjoy.
"We have acts for kids, others for the youth and of course, for the adults," Lawson said. "We wanted to make an impact on everyone, so we didn't target one age group, we wanted to cater to all of them."
By doing so, it reaped much success in bringing several people either into the body of Christ or brought lost souls back into communion with Him.
"By touching them we were able to convey the message of Christ, drawing them to salvation and rededication," Lawson said.
With such a powerful and timely message, several churches have already lined up to reserve seats for the performance.
"This play represents the sacrifice of Christ and how it applies to us," Lawson said. "If one wants to know how the Bible helps us get through the perils of daily life, I believe that we can help with this musical."
Kirby Memorial Baptist Church is located at 512 Chandler Road. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. For more information or to reserve seats for large groups, call (864) 489-4884.
