Defending 2-time state champ Indians begin spring drills
Head coach Phil Strickland and the two-time defending state champion Gaffney Indians will begin spring practice Thursday. Nine or 10 spring practice sessions are planned for the team. Gaffney must replace the state's Mr. Football Malcolm Long, blazing wide receiver Tyson Petty and its two starting cornerbacks.
However, it's never gloom and doom for the two-time defending state champions who open spring practice Thursday.
"The kids have worked hard," Gaffney head football coach Phil Strickland said. "They are doing things they've been asked to do."
Strickland said the players have used the offseason to get stronger and faster.
Just how much faster will be evident tomorrow when the players are timed in the 40-yard dash and the pro-shuttle.
As in years past, the Indians will begin spring practice when most other teams are wrapping up their drills. But that's just fine with Strickland.
"(Starting later) kills a lot of birds with a couple of stones," he said. "We can jump right into our 7-on-7 (passing drill) stuff and also this allows the other sports to fizzle so we don't miss anybody."
Strickland said he plans to have nine or 10 practice sessions. The team will practice from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m.
Next Monday, the coaches and players will review the basic offenses and defenses. Fundamentals will also be stressed.
"We will put in our basic type of offense and will work on a lot of fundamental stuff," the Gaffney coach said. "We will review blocking assignments and try to get in tune for the start of August."
Offensive line coach Charlie Patterson replaces longtime offensive coordinator Greg Lawson, who was hired as head coach at Laurens. But Strickland said the offense won't change much.
"He has simplified some calls," Strickland said.
With the departure of Long, the quarterback situation will be under the microscope this season. Former jayvee starter Dustin Batchler is the heir apparent to Long. Bo Davidson, Batchler's backup on the jayvee, is also in the mix.
"Obviously when you lose a quarterback like Malcolm, there will be a concern there," Strickland said.
There are also big losses on defense, where the Indians must replace starting cornerbacks Kendrick Tate and Shrine Bowler Kelin Morris.
"There are a lot of holes to fill," Strickland said.
The Indians are scheduled to appear at the Clemson 7 on 7 passing tournament on June 16-17. Strickland said no other passing league dates have been firmed up.
