Retired from Cherokee County School District

Mardila Smith Williams, 91, of 408 McCluney Drive, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at 11:06 p.m. in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

A native of Gaffney, she was the widow of Eugene Arthur Williams and daughter of the late Sam D. Smith and the late Hattie Gilmore Smith. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, Sunday School teacher and organizer of the Sunshine Band Choir and the first candlelight. She was also a member of the church's Senior Missionary Society, Senior Choir, Hymn Choir and Kitchen Committee.

Mrs. Williams was a former member of the NAACP and the Indian Hill Sympathy Club. She retired as a culinary specialist from the Cherokee County School District.

Surviving are three daughters, Edith Williams, Joan Williams, both of Norwalk, Conn., and Gloria Williams of the home; a son, Jerry Williams of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a grandson whom she reared as a son, Bevan L. Robbs of Lake Worth, Fla.
