Post 109 thumps Greer, 13-3
JEFF OSMENT Post 109 got back on the winning side of the ledger in a big way Thursday at Commisioners Field, using 16 hits en route to a 13-3 victory over Greer.
The team, which was looking for a spark in the hitting department, found it with every player that walked into the batter's box.
"We played a lot better tonight," Gaffney manager Jeff Osment said. "The players were able to make some things happen and it equaled runs for us."
Things did not get off the way that Osment had hoped, however, as Greer was able to get leadoff hitter Brian Saxson on base. After a stolen base and a passed ball, Matt Holliday brought him home with a sacrifice bunt that put the visitors up by a run.
From that point, Post 109 was in control, capitalizing on a Greer error to push two runs across the plate.
"They scored a run on us and we were able to come back with two of our own," Osment said. "It showed a lot of character for our team, helping us to keep momentum on our side."
Also on their side was the strong pitching of Dustin Byars, who after giving up a run in the first inning settled into things - sending the next eight Greer batters back to the dugout.
While Greer bats were napping, Gaffney's were making music with a string of six consecutive hits - five of which were doubles pushed Post 109's lead to 7-1.
According to Osment, a lot of those doubles were the result of pure hustle and determination.
"I tell the guys that if you do good things that better results will follow," Osment said. "We showed a lot of hustle, and it resulted in runs for us."
Greer would score runs in each of the next two innings to close the lead to 7-3, but that was the closest that it would get as Gaffney scored six runs during the course of the next three innings to close out the contest.
Byars, who Osment believed was one of the primary reasons the team came away with a victory, pitched a complete game, giving up three runs, only two of which were earned on four hits.
"He threw a great game for us, which is exactly what we needed for him to do for us," Osment said.
Next up for Post 109 is an away game with Union, a team which has been a nemesis for Gaffney, beating them twice alreadythis season.
Osment is confident though that with a game like this one his team could get a measure of revenge.
"If we hit like we did tonight we can beat Union," Osment said.
