Not happy about water problem notification in Blacksburg

Dear Editor:

I live in the town of Blacksburg and at 11 p.m. on Saturday, I found out that I should have been boiling my water all day because of a water main break.

This break occurred at 7 a.m. on the same day. I had been drinking the water all day without knowledge of the problem. Had I not listened to the 11 p.m. news on WSPA Channel 7, I never would have known about the break and the need to boil water.

I am facing major surgery in three days and an infection from any source could have compromised my health.

My question is WHY the residents of Blacksburg were not notified the same way we were notified of the missing woman a couple of weeks ago?

I know there are several people within Blacksburg township that have compromised immune systems that could be in danger from lack of notification.

I personally listen to the 6 a.m. news and SOMETIMES the 11 p.m. news on weekends. How many people in Blacksburg are clueless of the need to boil their water? I feel that something needs to be done to correct this oversight.

I will say that a Ms. Kelly Medlin that answered the number listed on the news was reassuring that I would not be in danger.

But the fact still remains that I went 16 hours not knowing that I could be drinking contaminated water. Maybe the town council needs to look into the emergency plans they have in place for just such occurrences. Thank you.
