      Trevin Taber's bat keyed another dramatic win for surging Post 109. Taber homered twice and knocked in seven runs as Post 109 advanced to its third straight American Legion state tournament with a 17-7 win in the decisive game five of its series with Lancaster on Friday.

      It's back to work for the two-time defending state champion. The Indians took the field at 8 a.m. for the first of two practice sessions. The Indians' second, two-hour practice session began at 11 a.m. With the first scrimmage just five days away, Gaffney head coach Phil Strickland said there is no time to waste.

Realignment brings unpleasant changes for local schools

      It's back to the future for Gaffney High School athletics. Gaffney will leave Region II-4A and join Region III-4A under the South Carolina High School League's realignment plan for 2008-2010. The Indians were a member of Region III-4A from 2004-'06.

Rice inks 4-year deal

      Former Gaffney High great Sidney Rice missed the first day of Minnesota Viking training camp. But that was all he missed after he agreed to a four-year deal Friday evening. Rice reported to Minnesota State-Mankato, the site of the Vikings training camp, after signing the deal.

Wildcats look to improve

      About 60 Blacksburg High football players attended the team's first practice Friday as preparations officially began for the 2007 season. Blacksburg improved from 1-10 to 5-5 last year to qualify for the playoffs in their first year in Class 2A. The Wildcats hope another strong sophomore class and veteran leadership will help the team achieve higher goals this year.
