County slates hearings on airport, junkyards
Local residents will get their say Sept. 4 on a couple of controversial ordinances under consideration by Cherokee County Council.
The public hearings, which will take place at 5 p.m. at the Spartanburg Community College branch campus's business center, concern junkyard and airport fund ordinances.
According to the proposed airport ordinance, council would designate for the airport project each year one-fourth of the one mill from the county's capital project fund.
Councilman Bailey Humphries, a proponent of the airport project, told council the county was dropped from the state aeronautic commission's list of proposed airport projects because of a concern over funding.
He then suggested dipping into the county's capital project fund to establish a funding mechanism to pay for a proposed airport. Council members Charles Mathis and James Batchler opposed the motion on first reading.
But the junkyard ordinance has become a priority for Mathis, who expressed concern at a recent council meeting that junkyards were popping up adjacent to residential communities in his district.
The proposed ordinance stipulates that new junkyards must be located on a continuous parcel, have a minimum front lot line of 100 feet on public right-of-way. New junkyards must also be at least 500 feet from a single residence and 1,000 feet from 10 or more contiguous residences, under the proposed ordinance.
Junkyards owners would have to pay a $50 permit fee.
