BRIEFS Korn has 3 TD passes Freshman Willy Korn threw three touchdown passes in Clemson's scrimmage on Saturday while starter Cullen Harper had two. Korn opened with an interception on his first throw. But later found walk-on Terrance Ashe with a 37- yard score, fellow freshman Brian Linthicum for a 15-yard TD and fullback Alex Pearson for a 3-yard touchdown pass. Korn, a highly regarded prospect from Byrnes High, finished 6 of 13 for 91 yards. Harper, who came into the fall as the team's No. 1, connected with Jacoby Ford for a 6-yard TD and Durrell Barry for a 3-yard TD. Harper, a junior, was 8 of 11 for 80 yards. ''The quarterbacks played well. They made some good throws and some good reads,'' Clemson coach Tommy Bowden said. ''They got the offense in the end zone a couple of times.'' Bowden said he wasn't satisfied with the pace of the offense and getting plays off on time. Garcia sees scrimmage action Stephen Garcia took his first, nervous steps at South Carolina, the highly regarded passer tossing a touchdown during the Gamecocks' scrimmage on Saturday. Garcia completed 5 of 8 throws for 50 yards, including a 5-yard TD pass to tight end Jared Cook in the team's workout at Williams-Brice Stadium before about 6,000 fans. Garcia was supposed to be further along by now. After all, he was the centerpiece of coach Steve Spurrier's incoming class, a strong-armed, cocky, productive quarterback who looked like he was just what the ball coach wanted to rebuild South Carolina. Garcia enrolled in January and planned to soak up as much of the Gamecocks attack as he could. However, two arrests in his first two months got him booted from spring practices and the team's annual Garnet and Black game this past April. For the record, Garcia faked a handoff to fellow freshman Brian Maddox his first time under center and rolled left for a gain of 4 yards. Garcia's first pass came two plays later, an easily thrown ball to new tight end Weslye Saunders.
