Indians shrug off Crest
Ledger photo by LARRY HILLIARD Gaffney running back Jeremiah Cochran is wrapped up by a Crest defender during the third annual Border Showcase Saturday at Shelby High School. Gaffney coach Phil Strickland wasn't surprised at what he saw Saturday at the Border Showcase - some early mistakes by the offense and defense but a team that has the potential to defend their state championship.
"We fumbled and bumbled and made a lot of mistakes," said Strickland after his team's 16-6 victory over Crest. "But you are supposed to now. Last year, we weren't very good early on. The mistakes aren't a big concern right now."
Strickland got a good look at both quarterbacks who are looking to replace all-state Malcolm Long.
With stalled drives and turnovers in the first quarter, the Gaffney offense didn't look anything like last season.
Gaffney fumbled on its initial series, failed to pick up a first down and punted on its second series and Dustin Batchler threw an interception on the Indians' third possession.
Crest took advantage of the fumble to score its only points on a 6-yard touchdown reception.
The Indians' offense came to life under Bo Davidson, a junior varsity backup last year. After failing to move the team on his first series, Davidson engineered a 30-yard drive that stalled at the Crest 8 when Jeremiah Cochran ran into a wall on a 4th-and-five.
But the drive would ultimately lead to points when the Indians' defense stopped Crest deep inside its own territory.
The Indians got a safety when the punt snap sailed into the end zone.
A nifty punt return by Cameron Smith set the Indians up at the Crest 36.
Ten plays later, Davidson hit tight end David Dewberry for an 8-yard touchdown. The extra point gave the Indians a 9-6 lead.
Stephon Adams' interception led to the Indians' other score when Davidson hit Jeffrey Brown for a touchdown with :16 left in the game.
The Indians defense was tough to run on, thanks to linebacker J.B. Shippy, who was named the player of the game.
"The kids showed up to play and we have the potential to be competitive," Strickland said.
The Indians return to practice today in preparation for a 6 p.m. scrimmage Tuesday against visiting Strom Thurmond.
