Blacksburg High assistant coach Jay Huffstetler fires up his defensive players Friday during a timeout in a jamboree game against Landrum at Woodruff High School. Blacksburg quarterbacks Joseph Upchurch and Dustin Byars didn't make a coaching decision on a starting quarterback any easier Friday in a 13-0 jamboree win over Landrum.

Upchurch threw a 16-yard touchdown pass and Byars scored on an 8-yard run in the Wildcats' first preseason game action. The quarterbacks completed 60 percent of their passes for 95 yards.

Wide receiver Jonathan Coleman pulled off a hat trick of sorts with two magnificent catches on Blacksburg's second scoring drive.

Coleman outleaped a Landrum defender and tipped a ball twice to himself to reel in a 30-yard pass from Upchurch. The senior wide receiver repeated his feat two plays later when he tipped the ball to himself again for a 16- yard touchdown for a 13-0 Blacksburg lead.

"Those were good catches. It was a blessing," Blacksburg head coach Robbie Blanton said. "He had missed a few passes in the warmups that hit him in the hands."

Byars started the game at quarterback. After a shaky couple series with the running game, Byars hit his next four passes to lead the Wildcats on a 64-yard scoring drive.

Byars completed passes to three different receivers, highlighted by a 20-yard pass over the middle to tight end Gary Dean Moore. Wide receiver Chris Hames had a pair of catches on the drive.

Byars had an 8-yard run for the first Blacksburg touchdown. Placekicker Dillon Blankenship converted the extra point.

Overall, Blanton was pleased with how his players responded on special teams and other game situations in the Arthur State Bank Wolverine Jamboree. The Wildcats played the game with two potential quarterbacks Darrell Walton and Josh Elmore held out with injuries.

"The biggest thing is we didn't get anyone injured tonight. We just need to get healthy. We are really banged up on offense right now," Blanton said. "I thought we played well on defense."

Blacksburg overcame two fumbles, including one that gave Landrum possession on the 26- yard run. Led by senior nose tackle Dewitt Ford, the Wildcats defense held Landrum without a first down and watched the Cardinals fall short on a 36-yard field goal attempt.

Linebacker Dean Craig gave Blacksburg a chance for another score late in the half when he broke perfectly to disrupt a running play and force a fumble. Defensive tackle Brent Humphries recovered the ball at the 14-yard line.

Three runs by Geter and Byars gave Blacksburg a first and goal at the 2-yard line. The Wildcats went backwards on the next couple plays before Byars was intercepted near the end zone to end the possession.
