'Lunch & Learn' training session focuses on child abuse

      A statewide initiative with the goal of reducing incidents of child abuse will make a visit to Cherokee County on Wednesday, as Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina (PCASC) will host a "Lunch & Learn" training session at the Cherokee County Library.

County delays third reading on junkyard ordinance

      Cherokee County Council delayed third reading of its controversial ordinance to regulate junkyards over concerns it may cause undue financial hardship on junkyard owners. Under the ordinance, junkyard owners would have two years to erect a fence on the front of their property and five years to extend the fence to the entire property.

Starmax to host bowl-a-thon

      The bowling lanes at Starmax will be used for a good cause next weekend as the entertainment center will host a bowl-a-thon in hopes of helping thousands of Americans in their fight against leukemia. Starmax opened earlier this year to rave reviews partially due to their combination of several movie theaters, a game room, bowling alley and sports bar.

Three face meth charges

      Metro Narcotics agents arrested three Gaffney residents early Tuesday morning and charged them with possession of methamphetamines. Roger Dean Wylie Jr., 18, and Celia N. Wylie, 22, of 219 Chesnut Ridge Road, and William James Frank III, 24, of 303 Joyce St. were arrested by officers at 312 E. Frederick St.

Meerkats favorite webcam animal at Riverbanks Zoo
      COLUMBIA - Webcam fans have voted on their favorite ZooView animal, and the active, slender-tailed meerkat has stolen the show. Throughout the month of September, the meerkats will be the star of the SCE&G ZooView webcam. "This is not a huge surprise given the enormous popularity of meerkats," said Dargan Davis, public relations manager for Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.

SCDOT picking up litter from area roads
      South Carolina Department of Transportation maintenance crews in Cherokee County are out in full force this month, picking up litter from along sections of highways throughout the county. On Sept. 11, the crews will pick up litter from I-85, S-11- 661, S-11,659, S-11-666, S-11- 659, S-11-111 and S-11-41.
