Blacksburg's futility continues

      Marcus Lindsay and Jarrell Smalls brought their big play acts Friday to help Whitmire overpower Blacksburg, 42-13, in the Wildcats home opener. Smalls scored three touchdowns, including a 70-yard run on a screen play that give Whitmire a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Indians power past Union

      Once again, Gaffney was ineffective early and nearly perfect late. Last week, the Indians scored two late touchdowns but it wasn't enough in a 21-14 loss at Greenville. On Friday, Gaffney exploded for three fourth-quarter touchdowns, including one by the defense, to down visiting Union County, 27-7.

Smith has big game in Panthers' victory

      ST. LOUIS - Steve Smith conjured echoes of the 2003 playoffs with another long touchdown catch that propelled the Carolina Panthers and quieted the same St. Louis crowd. Smith outsprinted Tye Hill on a 68-yard catch for the goahead play in Carolina's 27-13 opening victory on Sunday.

Applicants for this showcase go through a long rigorous selection process before being accepted to play in this event.

      The Gaffney High volleyball team remained undefeated in the region with a five-set victory over Spartanburg on Thursday. The Lady Indians took the first set 25-17 before dropping the next two, 21-25, 29-25. Gaffney then rallied to win the fourth set 25-19 and the deciding set 15-6.
