Dewberry shows versatility catching and throwing
Gaffney's David Dewberry was on the receiving and throwing end of passes on Friday.
Dewberry was expected to play exclusively at tight end this season. But the former quarterback proved his worth - and versatility - in igniting a lethargic offense by playing both positions against Union County.
Dewberry had three catches for 15 yards. He was also an impressive nine of 14 through the air for 74 yards.
Dewberry said he knew he would take a more prominent role in the team's offense.
"I took snaps during practice and coach told me that I'd play quarterback. I just knew that I had to step up," Dewberry said.
He was inserted at quarterback on the second drive and scored on a keeper from five yards out. He was also under center when the Indians drove 67 yards for the go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter. He completed three passes during the drive, including a key third-and-10 strike to backup wideout Tim Dawkins.
Dewberry said he's just glad to contribute.
"I just want to do what I can to help the team," Dewberry said. "I feel that tight end is my true position, but I will do what is best for the team."
Dewberry's performance is even more amazing because he was working with a depleted receiving corps after the loss of starters Jeffery Brown and Emison Hughes to injury.
"The young receivers stepped up," Dewberry said. "The offensive line also deserves a lot of credit in giving me time to throw."
