Michael Gaffney Day celebrates birthday of city's founding father
Historic Downtown Gaffney will be the place to be Saturday when City of Gaffney hosts its annual Michael Gaffney Day. The celebration gets underway at 10 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m.
Michael Gaffney's restored log cabin and surrounding grounds will be the site for the Michael Gaffney Day celebration Saturday. Located at the restored cabin of the city's founder on North Limestone Street, events will include bluegrass music, talks by local historians, old-fashioned games, early arts and crafts demonstrations and sales, artisans attired in period dress, and food and fun for all ages.
Shirley Randolph, a local resident known for her talent for decorating historic structures with all-natural materials, will have the cabin and grounds decked out in autumn splendor.
Children and adults can take part in old-fashioned games - hopscotch, checkers, dominos and apple-peeling contests - and hear stories about Michael Gaffney and what it was like to live in Gaffney and Cherokee County many, many years ago.
Jane Wilson, a renowned basketmaker, will be demonstrating her craft and have handmade baskets for sale.
Other artists include Andy Cox of Limestone College who will demonstrate handmade flutes and other items; artist Sara Dame Setzer who will display her quilting; Cynthia Link, a local artist who will be working with clay; artist Cindy Wilson who will be making old-fashioned handkerchief dolls; and artists Liz Welsh, Tedi Gibbons and others.
"This is a great home-grown celebration for the whole family," said Pat Throneburg, program director for the Gaffney Information and Visiors Center. "We invite everyone to bring a lawn chair and join us as we honor the memory and celebrate the birthday of our city's founding father, Michael Gaffney, and enjoy a day of fun, music, demonstrations, games and history."
Apple cider, peanuts, cookies, apples, popcorn, soft drinks, will be available for purchase and, weather permitting, grilled hot dogs will be sold at noon.
In case of rain, the events will be moved to the Gaffney Information and Visitors Center at 301 N. Limestone St.
