Gaffney mayor presses county to help fund proposed soccer complex

      The county needs to make a financial commitment to make the proposed Lake Whelchel soccer complex a reality, Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly said. Speaking at the Cherokee County Chamber retreat Friday in Charleston, Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly said it's time for the county to appropriate funds for the project.

Boys and Girls club receives $5,000 donation

      Wal-Mart donated $5,000 Saturday to the local Boys and Girls Club. Area director Vance Hammond announced the gift Saturday at a "Kids Day" held on athletic fields behind the club on Pecan Street. Parents and children spent four hours participating in a sports clinic, safety demonstrations by Gaffney firefighters and police officers and enjoying snow cones and music.

Fire department receives grant
      The Gaffney Fire Department has received $54,431 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Chief Nathan Ellis said almost $25,000 will be used to buy technical rescue equipment, and the rest will fund eight mobile radios and a thermal imager.
