Gaffney mayor presses county to help fund proposed soccer complex The county needs to make a financial commitment to make the proposed Lake Whelchel soccer complex a reality, Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly said. Speaking at the Cherokee County Chamber retreat Friday in Charleston, Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly said it's time for the county to appropriate funds for the project. Jolly said the city has paid for the design plans and has also pledged to contribute more funds to the project. "It's time for the county to kick in some money," Jolly said. The Gaffney Board of Public Works has agreed to donate 30 to 40 acres at Lake Whelchel for the project. During his presentation, Jolly applauded the city's efforts to improve the recreational facilities, including improvements to Thomson Park, Park Place, Azell Robbs Park. Plans are in the works to upgrade McCluney Park. The city has also built three new parks, including Johnny Little Park, City Park and West End Park. "We have improved the parks, and we were able to accomplish this because no one cared who got the credit," Jolly said. |
