SPRINGDALE, Md. - Eugene Pitman Smith, 88, of 9023 Taylor St., died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at 4:15 a.m. in Crescent Cities Rehab Center, Riverdale, Md.

Born March 10, 1919, in Gaffney, he was the son of the late Zellie Smith and the late Lucinda S. Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer Smith.

Surviving are his former wife, Tinnie M. Smith of Gaffney; a son, Zellie ("Sonny") Smith (Stina) of Bridgeport, Conn.; a daughter, Dorothy Phillips of Gaffney; five sisters, Ezra Tate of Gaffney, Madeline Elder, Wilton Penn, Pansy Martin and Sarah Ealey, all of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Leroy Smith of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren, one of whom, Beverly Oglesby, he reared in the home as a daughter; seven great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and an uncle, Lewis Smith of Winston-Salem, N.C.
