Gaffney running back becomes team's go-to guy

The Mauldin defense was no match for Gaffney running back Steffen Foster.

Foster rushed for a career best 148 yards on 24 carries in the Indians' 35- 21 win over Mauldin on Friday.

Foster was especially effective in the second half when the Indians controlled the game with their running attack.

"I just knew that as a senior I had to get the players up," Foster said. "We just started to move the ball like we should have in the first half."

Foster tweaked his leg in the first half but didn't sit on the sidelines for long.

"Somebody just fell on my knee wrong," he said. "That's just part of football."

Foster said the Indians simply wore down the Mauldin defense in the second half.

"Coach (Strickland) knew what we had to do and what we are best at," Foster said. "Their (defensive) line was getting tired. We just blew them off the field. The whole offense just did what they had to do."

Foster said he enjoyed being the focus of the offense in the second half.

"It's just satisfying to help the team," he said. "Whatever they want to do is what I'll do for the team."

Foster praised his offensive line for creating open holes.

Although the Indians have relied more on the run the last two games, Foster said it's too early to give up on the passing game.

"Right now, the key for us is to run the ball. But the passing game is also a strength. We'll get better at it as the season goes along," he said.
