Woodruff tops

Blacksburg jayvees

Blacksburg quarterback Joseph Upchurch connected with Myron Mitchell on an 80-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

The scoring strike was the only highlight for the Blacksburg junior varsity Thursday evening in its 42-6 loss to Woodruff. The Wolverines blocked three punts, recovering two of the blocked punts inside the 10- yard line.

Woodruff scored touchdowns following all three blocked punts, returning one for a touchdown.

Strickland comes up

big for Wofford

Former Gaffney standout Andy Strickland had three catches for 68 yards in Wofford's 42-31 upset of No. 1 ranked Appalachian State on Saturday. Strickland also caught a touchdown pass for the third straight game.

Rice has

two catches in loss

Former Gaffney High and South Carolina star Sidney Rice had two receptions for 21 yards in the Minnesota Vikings' loss to Kansas City on Sunday.

Rocky McIntosh, who also played for the Indians, had four tackles in Washington's loss to the New York Giants.

Cowpens edges

Blackburg Middle

Cowpens Middle recovered an onsides kick with 30 seconds left to preserve a hard-fought 34-30 win Thursday over Blacksburg.

Trevon Parker threw a 55-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter. Cowpens recovered the onsides kick and ran out of the clock to hold off Blacksburg.

Coach Toby Elliott cited Cowpens power running game as the difference in the game.

Edwards' win

in doubt

His car parked on the track because of a late-race red flag, Carl Edwards had time to catch replays on the big screen of the crash that wiped out other Chase drivers.

Edwards could only think about how lucky he was that he would get away from Dover unscathed.

''This place has great potential for disaster,'' he said.

Edwards avoided trouble on the track Sunday to win at Dover International Speedway, but he found it in the garage. The No. 99 Ford failed the postrace inspection because the right rear fender was too low, and NASCAR this week will likely hit Edwards with a fine and dock him crucial points.
