McIntosh leads Redskins defense Former Gaffney High standout Rocky McIntosh had a team-leading six tackles in Washington's win over Detriot on Sunday. Hokies' special teams doom Clemson An interception return, a punt return and a kickoff return, all for touchdowns - and all typical for college football's masters of specal teams. ''That's Beamer-ball,'' grinned Virginia Tech linebacker Vince Hall. ''That's what we needed.'' And that's what sent coach Frank Beamer's 15th-ranked Hokies to a 41-23 victory over No. 22 Clemson on Saturday night. Yankees stave off elimination Dangerously close to getting swept, the New York Yankees woke up just in time to save their season and perhaps Joe Torre's job. Johnny Damon lofted a go-ahead, three-run homer in the fifth inning, rookies Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain rescued Roger Clemens and the Yankees rallied past Cleveland 8-4 Sunday night, closing within 2-1 in their first-round AL playoff series. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner blustered Saturday that Torre's run as manager was in jeopardy of ending after 12 seasons - all concluding with postseason appearances. |
