Man charged with robbery
A Gaffney man was arrested Thursday and accused of making off with a handful of cash at a local grocery store last week.
Gaffney Police Officer Michael Scruggs has charged Mark Anthony Wilkins, 35, of 201 New St., with common law robbery. Wilkins is accused of stealing $300 from a woman who had just cashed a check at the Ingle's grocery store on West Floyd Baker Boulevard.
According to reports at the Gaffney Police Department, a witness at Ingle's states that on Thursday at approximately noon, Wilkins was standing behind a woman in the store's customer service line as she was getting a check cashed.
The witness claims that as she finished the transaction, Wilkins grabbed the woman's money and ran out of the store.
Scruggs and another officer were able to catch Wilkins in the Wal-Mart parking lot, where he was identified by Ingle's store management.
The report states the officers found $300 on Wilkins. The money was turned over to Ingle's store management.
Wilkins was placed under arrest and taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center.
