Reunions

A reunion for anyone who attended Pacolet High School from 1929 to 1976 will be held Friday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. at Pacolet Mill Cloth Room, located on Sunny Acres Road. The fee is $10 per person. Preregister with the Town of Pacolet by Oct. 12 or pay at the door. Call to let the reunion organizers know if you plan to attend. To register, call 864-474-9594.

Red Cross events

The American Red Cross is organizing teams of volunteers to be trained to be Disaster Assistance Team Members. DAT members respond to the scene of a disaster and offer Red Cross disaster recovery assistance to victims. The all-day training will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at Brookview Healthcare Center, 510 Thompson St., in the conference room. The two-night training will be held Monday, Oct. 29, and Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 6-10 p.m. at the Cherokee County Red Cross building, 405 N. Logan St. Attendance both nights is required. The training is free. Interested persons should complete a DAT application prior to class registration. To register, call (864) 489-6066.

The Cherokee County American Red Cross will have a blood drive on Monday, Oct. 15, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the ARC, 405 N. Logan St. According to the ARC Blood Services, there is no substitute for human blood and the only source is volunteer donations. Because blood cells regenerate, a healthy person can donate blood as often as every 56 days. Community members who are in good health, at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood. All donors will receive a free ARC t-shirt and Trackside Diner will provide canteen treats. Call 489- 6066 to make an appointment.

Meetings

A GOP meeting will be held Thursday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the headquarters, 230 E. Floyd Baker Blvd. Volunteers to work the polls for the Presidential primary on Jan. 19, 2008, will be organized. Speaker will be a representative from Fred Thompson's campaign.

Community events

Magnolia's Assisting Living, 228 Tiffany Park, will sponsor a Health Fair on Friday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Twenty different health groups will be on hand. Anyone may attend. Magnolia's will be opning its new unit.

Special events

The Charlotte Folk Society will celebrate music, dance, crafts and lore with singing, dance, story telling and instruments workshops, mini concerts, demonstrations and jams on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Levine Museum of the New South, 200 E. 7th St., Charlotte. The activities are free with museum admission.

Daddy Joe's Beach House BBQ & Grill will host a fundraiser for the Cherokee County Literacy Association on Sunday, Oct. 14. Proceeds from the barbeque buffet lunch, 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m., will help the nonprofit agency teach local adults how to read. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 8 and younger. Takeout orders are available. To purchase tickets in advance, call 487-2707.

Church news

The Lil Solders for Christ of Youngs Grove Baptist Church, Blacksburg, will host a coat drive at Shear's Courtyard in Blacksburg, Hwy. 29- N, on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. until noon. This is a community coat drive and coats will be available to men, women and children free of charge. For more information, call Anissa Stowe, 1-704-491- 2824.

There will be a special service at New Harvest Ministries, 215 Pecan St., on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. Apostle Delores Barber of Detroit, Mich., will be ministering. Everyone welcome.

Dunton United Methodist Church will have fall revival services beginning Sunday, Oct. 14, at 5 p.m. with guest speaker, the Rev. Ervin Hannah, pastor of Erwin Temple C.M.E. Church, Codeemee, N.C. Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 15-17, guest speaker will be the Rev. Edward McDowell, pastor of Silver Hill U.M. Church, Spartanburg. The weekly services begin at 7 p.m. The Rev. John W. Evans, pastor, invites the public to attend.

Education

The Cherokee County Adult/Community Education Program will offer a basic introduction to computer class beginning Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 5-8 p.m. Participants will learn file management, formatting techniques, cut and paste, graphics insertions and manipulations, and tables and formulas.
