Developer purchases Sunny Slope property
"We would like to see something there in the near future."
      The business climate has warmed considerably here with Gramling Bros. hoping to transform the Sunny Slope Farms property into a model commercial, industrial and office development. The Spartanburg County developer purchased the 355.71-acre site for $3,533,500, according to a deed recorded Friday at the Cherokee County Courthouse.

Study on old post office renovation nearly complete
      The City of Gaffney soon should have a better idea just how much it will cost to convert the old post office building into an arts center. City Administrator James Taylor said the architectural firm of Craig, Gaulden and Davis should complete its preliminary study on the 13,000- square-foot historic structure within 60 days.

City taxes are due by Nov. 1
      The clock is ticking on City of Gaffney property owners to pay their tax bills. City officials mailed more than 6,000 tax notices to owners of real and personal property on Sept. 28. A 5 percent penalty is added to the bill of those property owners who fail to pay their taxes by Nov. 1. That penalty rises to 10 percent Dec. 1 and to 15 percent Jan. 1.

Blacksburg Town Council votes to move election date to August
      Blacksburg Town Council unanimously voted to move its election date if new school board election changes remain in effect. "It is a win-win situation," Blacksburg Mayor David Hogue said. "Having elections at the same time would benefit the entire town.

VITA volunteers sought
      Cherokee County is looking for volunteers interested in helping prepare tax returns under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Volunteers are needed in Cherokee County to help prepare tax returns for people who cannot pay for tax help. Volunteers will prepare basic federal and state tax returns a few hours each week from January 11 through April 15.

      The men and women of St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Floyd Baker Boulevard are sponsoring their Fall for Bingo missions fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 5-8 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Allison, Cook represent county at Silver Haired Legislature convention
      COLUMBIA - Five resolutions were proposed by the South Carolina Silver Haired Legislature at a meeting Sept. 11-13 in the chambers of the State House of Representatives These five were adopted by the more than 125 delegates from a list of 17 that were first proposed. These resolutions will be presented to the state legislature when it reconvenes in January.

Book signing
      The Rev. Charles E. Hood makes his return to Kirby Memorial Baptist Church this Thursday, where he will be on hand to sign his book entitled "Seven Day Journey Into Glory." Hood, who now resides in Laurens, delivered sermons from the church's pulpit for many years before deciding to take on other goals God placed in his way.

National talent to perform at annual Ghost Walk
      The annual Historic Hayride and Ghost Walk returns to Gaffney on October 26 and 27. This year's event will build on the previous four years, with a new storyline and theme, "The Keys to the Past." This year's script incorporates new characters, based on historic figures.
