City open to combining tax sale

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

City of Gaffney Administrator James Taylor said he has no problem with discussing a proposal to consolidate the county and municipal delinquent tax sales.

Cherokee County Interim Administrator Ben Clary said last week consolidating the delinquent tax sales would eliminate unnecessary confusion. Clary said there have been some instances in which two bidders have bought the same property since the municipalities and county have tax sales at different times.

The City of Gaffney typically conducts its tax sale in October. The county has scheduled its tax sale for Nov. 5.

"I'm always willing to look at all the options," Taylor said. "I'm willing to sit down and discuss it."

Taylor said he thinks a meeting between the county and municipal leaders will take place soon.

Clary proposed creating a standing committee with members from the county, City of Gaffney and Town of Blacksburg, but county council members told Clary to discuss the proposal with his counterparts from Gaffney and Blacksburg before moving forward with the idea.

County councilman Charles Mathis said having the county conduct a tax sale for all three local governments would be another way to solve the problem.
