All present and accounted for

      A Draytonville Elementary first grade class went three weeks with perfect attendance before the streak ended this week. All students were present in substitute teacher Nancy McAloney's classroom for 18 straight days until one student was counted absent Tuesday.

Audit council lists areas to be reviewed

      The South Carolina General Assembly's Legislative Audit Council passed the first hurdle in trying to resolve the issue of the state's non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) program. The council conducted survey work on a legislative audit regarding a controversial decision by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in May.

School board election changes take effect next year

      A new school election date means no special election is needed to fill the vacant seat left by the Oct. 15 death of school trustee Ola Copeland. A special election is required if a school board vacancy occurs within 10 months of a regular election.

Saturday's 'Memory Walk' has something for everyone

      Saturday's Memory Walk that will help fund efforts to find a cure for Alzheimer's Disease has taken on a festive feel this year, with a number of events for all ages to enjoy. "We wanted to get everyone involved with the event," said Jonna Turner of the Memory Walk organizing committee.

      America's young people need our help, concluded a panel of child development experts that came together in New York City Friday, Oct. 19, to examine issues impacting youth. Too many children and teens are not receiving the guidance they need to graduate from high school, to avoid the effects of violence, gangs and drugs, or to become responsible adults.

MEALS FOR PETS
     Mary Carpenter and Joan Ganther presented bags of dog food to Meals on Wheels recently to be given to people on their lunch routes who have animals. The donation was prompted by some Meals on Wheels clients sharing their meals with pets, which gave them less to eat. Pet food and monetary donations for Saving Gaffney Pets are currently being accepted at the Meals on Wheels office at 403 W. Montgomery St.

'Neighbor Helping Neighbor' auction Nov. 10
      Iron City Ministries will sponsor its fifth annual auction, "Neighbor Helping Neighbor," on Saturday, Nov. 10, at Blacksburg Middle School. Events begin at noon with a hot dog sale, silent auction, bake sale and yard sale. A live auction starts at 6 p.m. and door prizes will be awarded throughout the evening.

Cherokee County included in disaster designation for 5th District counties
      WASHINGTON - The Secretary of Agriculture has issued a Secretarial Disaster Designation for 13 South Carolina Fifth District counties that have been hit by severe drought. The designation makes farmers who have suffered crop losses eligible to apply for low-interest emergency loans.

Donation made in memory of 'Pitt' Brown
      A donation was recently given to the Bob Prevatte Education Scholarship Foundation in memory of Robert 'Pitt' Brown by his wife, Sherrie, and daughters Lindsey and Lauren. Pitt's brother, Fender Brown, and his wife Patsy also made a donation to the foundation.
