22-year-old dies Sunday after wreck

A 22-year-old Gaffney man died Sunday afternoon from injuries sustained in an accident that occurred the previous evening in the Draytonville community.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the victim as Jason L. Hansen of 114 Draytonville Church Road in Gaffney. Fowler said Hansen died Sunday at 2:55 p.m. at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center from injuries in a wreck late Saturday evening.

Hansen was the driver and only occupant in a 1989 Buick that was headed south on Draytonville Church Road about 11:30 p.m. said Lance Cpl. Ron Johnson of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. After losing control, Johnson said Hansen drove the vehicle off the left side of the roadway where it traveled up an embankment. The vehicle went airborne and landed against a tree.

Hansen suffered severe injuries in the accident and was flown by helicopter from the scene to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Johnson said. A toxicology report has been requested by the State Law Enforcement Division.

The coroner has ruled Hansen's death as an accident. Hansen is the 11th traffic fatality in Cherokee County this year.
