Quarterback Josh Upchurch scored the Wildcats' second touchdown on a 1-yard run. He set up the score with a 33-yard run. Caleb Earls had a 35-yard touchdown catch for Blacksburg's final score. Upchurch connected with Ty Davis on the 2- point conversion pass. The Blacksburg junior varsity's lone win came in the opening game of the season. Many of the team's top players saw significant playing time on the varsity. "We got better as the season went on. We had a lot of players who were able to help out on the varsity," jcoach Tyrone McGill said. "We were able to move the football against Crescent. We just made too many turnovers and mistakes." Blacksburg Middle takes title Two late defensive stops and a five-yard run by quarterback Treyvon Parker allowed Blacksburg Middle to beat Mabry 8-6 for the championship Thursday. Trailing by a touchdown, the Blacksburg Middle defense recovered a fumble at the 40-yard line following a hard hit on a Mabry runner. The Wildcats offense moved the ball down the field on passes to wide receiver Raymond Ellis and runs by Vinny Thompson. Parker scored on a quarterback keeper on a fourth down play with 43 seconds left. A series of passes and a pass interference penalty moved Mabry into scoring range. Blacksburg Middle defensive back Blake Tharpe made a tackle at the 15-yard line on the game's final play to preserve the victory. Coach Toby Elliott praised his team's effort and hard work throughout the championship season. "I'm very excited for our football team. This was a great game. Our kids played hard and were very coachable," Elliott said. "We were balanced all night. We were able to mix the run and pass. We just kept chipping away and made the plays at the end of the game to win." Rice has three catches for Vikes Former Gaffney and South Carolina star Sidney Rice had three catches for 27 yards for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Gaffney runners finish seventh The Gaffney High boys cross country team finished seventh at Saturday's Region II-4A meet. Austin Steagall was the top finisher for Gaffney with a time of 18:31. Colts batter Panthers, 31-7 Peyton Manning set another record and the Indianapolis Colts are 7-0 again. Now, everybody can look ahead to the showdown with New England. Manning shook off a slow start to throw for 254 yards and two touchdowns and broke Johnny Unitas' team record for career scoring passes in the Colts' 31-7 win over the injury-plagued Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Joseph Addai rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns and caught a TD pass from Manning, who was outplayed early by 43-yearold Vinny Testaverde. But when Testaverde left at halftime with tendinitis in his right Achilles' tendon, Manning made sure the Colts' much-anticipated matchup with Tom Brady and the Patriots wouldn't be tarnished by dominating the second half. |
