Key defensive adjustment shuts door on Dorman Once Gaffney figured out how to stop Dorman quarterback Johnny Foster, things turned out all right for the Indians. Foster had two big gains on the first series, but was held in check for the rest of the game. Gaffney defensive coordinator Dan Jones credited defensive line coach Ben Fuller with making a key adjustment to shut down Foster. Jones said Fuller suggested the Gaffney defensive end engage the Dorman offensive tackle, who was getting out to block the Gaffney linebackers, freeing Foster for big runs. "Coach Fuller made a neat adjustment," Jones said. The coaching staff also made some personnel changes to get more beef along the defensive line. Defense tackle Levor Ross moved to end and Mark Stevenson started at tackle. "We wanted to get bigger and stronger because we were really impressed with the Dorman offensive line," Jones said. The Gaffney defense allowed nearly 500 yards in a loss to Byrnes last week. On Friday, the unit limited the Cavaliers to just 228 yards. "We challenged the kids before the game," Jones said. "We said it's all about what you are supposed to do when you get knocked down. You have to fight yourself back. They really competed." Although the entire unit played well, Jones said Darius Dawkins and Stevenson had huge games. "They both did super jobs," he said. The win locks up second place in the region and a home playoff game for the Indians. "It was a big game," Jones said. "We are pleased because it means we'll play another home game." |
