Indians must overcome height mismatch
At 6-2, David Dewberry will be the tallest member of this year's Gaffney High basketball team. The Gaffney boys basketball team will be long on quickness but short on height this season.
Just how short?
"In my 18 years of coaching this is the shortest team I've ever had," Gaffney coach Mark Huff said.
David Dewberry, who is currently the quarterback of the football team, will be the tallest member of the team at 6-2.
Huff, who began preseason practice on Monday, said the Indians must overcome their lack of size with their quickness.
"We have to step it up on the defensive end," he said. "We have to do a good job pressing the ball and blocking out."
The Indians are without a good chunk of their players who are playing football. Those players who have yet to practice include Robert Butler, Emison Hughes, Jeff Brown, Darius Dawkins, Ty Dawkins, Dewberry, Eddie Jefferies and Johnny Woods.
The Indians have also been slowed by injuries. Jazz Palmer is recovering from a pulled groin muscle, while Chase Smith is out for the season after tearing a knee ligament.
Huff said he has combined the varsity and junior varsity for practice sessions.
"Right now, we have 14 players out from grade 10 through 12," he said.
Huff said he's spent the first week of practice installing the fullcourt press and motion offense.
The Indians were picked for third with Boiling Springs in a preseason vote of the coaches. Spartanburg and big man Omar Sanders were the preseason choice to win the region. Hillcrest and its all-state selection Steadman Short were picked second.
The Indians' first scrimmage is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. against the visiting Southside Tigers.
Gaffney opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 30 against visiting York.
