Veterans park closer to becoming reality

      A groundbreaking ceremony will soon be held for a Cherokee County Veterans Appreciation Park. The Cherokee County Veterans Day Organization has raised $270,000 towards the estimated $500,000 project cost. The majority of the money has come from a $200,000 grant from the state's competitive grants program.

Women charged with manufacturing meth

      Two Gaffney women are in police custody after agents from the Cherokee County Metro Narcotics Unit said they found drugs and drug paraphernalia while executing a search warrant Friday. Kimberly Stafford, 39, and Kasie Nichole Tessnear, 17, both of 600 Soapstone Road, are charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and trafficking methamphetamine.

Junkyard ordinance gets final OK

      Without debate, Cherokee County Council on Monday unanimously passed final reading of an ordinance that will require junkyard owners to erect an 8-foot fence on the portion of their property that fronts public rights-of-way.

Lottery has been very good to Cherokee County School District

      The Cherokee County School District continues to receive $450,000 annually from the state's education lottery. This amount has remained steady since the lottery started in 2002.

Company breaks ground for new facility

      Lesco Restoration Company officially broke ground on its 13,000-square foot facility Tuesday as the company prepared to begin construction at the intersection of Overbrook Drive and Midway Road. "I have loved this property since I first laid eyes on it," Lesco President Carolyn Chapman said.

Playoff tickets on sale Friday
      Playoff tickets for the Lexington-Gaffney game will be sold at the high school Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. The tickets are $6. Season ticket holders will be able to sit in their reserved seat but must purchase a ticket and bring the playoff stub to their seat.

Boy Scouts to hold round
      Local Boy Scout troops will hold a scouting round-up Thursday from 7-8 p.m. in several Gaffney area locations. Boys interested in joining cub scouts (ages 7-10) and Boy Scouts (ages 11-17) should plan on coming to scouting round-up meetings at Buford Street Methodist Church, First Baptist Church of Gaffney or Macedonia Baptist Church.

      Despite the weather, the Tony Howard Show that featured hip hop artists A.J., and Erin Malone in addition to Tony Howard and the James Brown Recording Artists, was a success thanks to attendance by members of the community and visitors from Spartanburg, Shelby and other surrounding towns.

      COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A private attorney and political newcomer said Tuesday he will seek the Democratic nomination for Sen. Lindsey Graham's seat next year. Michael Cone, 38, said he was looking for ''a large amount of small donations'' to challenge for the seat.

      CHEROKEE PINEAPPLES? - Christine Hyder of Gaffney, grew this pineapple from a cutting she got from a local grocery store. "I had heard you could grow them, but thought I'd only get the plant," she said. "And that's all I got for three years. But earlier this summer I noticed a small yellow fruit developing and here's proof you can grow pineapples in Gaffney.
