Gaffney to inject more speed into its offense

Joe Craig (19) and Bo Davidson, who missed Friday's game with a shoulder injury, are expected to see action at quarterback this Friday against Lexington. David Dewberry, who has taken most of the snaps under center, will return to tight end. Gaffney coach Phil Strickland knows a thing or two about winning football games - and it especially shows in the playoffs.

That's likely the reason Strickland said Tuesday that quarterback David Dewberry will return to his tight end position to improve the team's blocking.

Dewberry, who was chosen to the North-South All-Star Game as a tight end, has struggled at quarterback in the last three games. He completed 9 of his 18 throws for 95 yards against Spartanburg. He also threw an interception in the red zone.

"With the addition of David moving back at tight end, it gives you more blocking," Strickland said.

Strickland said without Dewberry at tight end, the Indians were susceptible to penetration from the corner.

Bo Davidson, who missed the Spartanburg game with a shoulder injury, will split time at quarterback with sophomore Joe Craig, who had the game-winning 64-yard touchdown run against the Vikings on Friday. Craig, who was the quarterback on the jayvee team this season, finished with 93 yards on six carries.

Strickland said that Davidson and Craig give the Indians added speed at the quarterback position.

As to how much playing time each quarterback will receive, that will be determined by this week's practices.

Strickland also didn't rule out the possibility that Dewberry might also take some snaps at center.

For the Indians to three-peat, they must improve offensively. Despite numerous trips into the red zone, the Indians have scored just three touchdowns in the last two games.

"Obviously, we have to score more points," the Gaffney coach said. "Everybody has to pull their share. We aren't going to point fingers. We just aren't getting it done. We are moving the ball, but we aren't scoring points."

The Indians are getting healthy for the playoffs. In addition to Davidson, offensive lineman Don Manning is expected to return to the lineup this week against Lexington.

"We are starting to get people back," Strickland said. "We are getting healthy."
