Williams shines, but Saints struggle in setback to Pirates

Marques Williams had 24 points and six assists but it wasn't enough in the Limestone Saints' 78-60 exhibition loss to Division I East Carolina on Saturday.

Williams was 8 for 14 from the field and made all five of his free throws. He also had three steals.

Williams was the only Saint in double figures.

Darrell Jenkins had 17 points and John Fields had 14 to lead East Carolina, which shot 46 percent from the field for the game.

The Pirates jumped to a 14-0 lead but the Saints answered with a run to pull within 16-15 with 12 minutes left in the first half.

But the Pirates closed the first half on a 29-10 spurt to take a commanding 18-point lead at halftime.

The Saints shot just 37 percent from the field.

Brock Young added 11 points for East Carolina.

The Saints shot only 64 percent from the free throw line, while the Pirates made 20 of their 27 free throws.

John Prioleau had seven rebounds to pace the Saints. Gabe Blair grabbed nine boards to lead the Pirates.

Limestone opens the regular season on Thursday, Nov. 15, at North Greenville.
