Man killed in crash

A 24-year-old North Carolina man was killed Friday afternoon in a single-vehicle accident outside Blacksburg.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the victim as Lawrence F. Farrell, of 137 Salene Drive, Earl.

Farrell was driving a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck on Bridges Road at approximately 4:30 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle while attempting to make a left turn onto Rock Springs Road, said Lance Cpl. Ron Johnson of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The officer said Farrell's vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it traveled off the right side of the road, struck a concrete culvert and overturned several times.

Farrell, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, Johnson said.
