No bond for suspect in murder case
A 22-year-old Gaffney man accused of committing a murder during an April robbery in the city was denied bond and a release from jail following a recent appearance in court.
An attorney for Talvin Jefferson Johnson, previously of West 3rd Street, asked Circuit Judge J. Derham Cole on Friday to consider a reasonable bond for Johnson, whom the attorney described as a lifelong resident with deep roots in the community.
Johnson has a short criminal record, with only a hit-and-run with property damage in his past, Johnson's attorney told the court.
Assistant Solicitor Kim Leskanic of the 7th Circuit Solicitor's Office opposed bond for Johnson, as did the parents of the murder victim, Chauncey L. Wilson, who asked the judge to deny Johnson's request.
Johnson is accused of shooting and killing Wilson during an April 16 incident at Berkeley Apartments. Leskanic claimed in court Johnson went to the apartment to rob "whoever was there."
Johnson admitted to the shooting when confronted by investigators, Leskanic told the court.
Judge Cole didn't rule from the bench but issued a written order after the hearing. He denied bond for Johnson on the basis he represented a danger to the community.
Johnson is accused of murder, burglary and armed robbery.
