Driver gassed up twice and not paying tab was big mistake
A Cowpens man stopped for an alleged gas drive-off Wednesday night was charged with drunk driving and a gas drive-off from earlier in the month.
Richard Scott Moss, 44, smelled of alcohol when stopped by a Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputy responding to a gas drive-off on Hyatt Street. Moss admitted drinking but later refused a breath test, police said.
He was charged with petit larceny, not having a license, not having insurance documents, a third offense driving while intoxicated, a third offense driving under suspension, and habitual offender.
In a separate report, Gaffney Police claimed Moss was involved in a gas drive-off that occurred Dec. 3.
Gun found in room
Gaffney Police recovered a handgun Wednesday that apparently was left in a local hotel by a traveler.
The .380 caliber Hi-Point handgun was found inside a room at the Jameson Inn on Stuard Street. A 27-year-old man from Richmond, VA, had stayed in the room and checked out earlier that morning, according to a police report. A records check on the weapon was clear.
No pizza, just cash
Gaffney Police are investigating the burglary of a West Jefferies Street pizza shop that occurred between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
An unknown person went into the Pizza Inn and took $2,000 from a safe. Police said there were no signs of a forced entry. A dead bolt on a rear door was unlocked.
Police were told only seven employees had keys to the building.
Trailer stolen
A 12-foot trailer was towed away by a thief from a property in the 2800 block of Wilkinsville Highway on Christmas Day, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
The black trailer with a wood floor was valued at about $800. The owner of the trailer said he was home all day and never heard anything suspicious. The theft occurred between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., according to police.
Tractor stolen
In a case of grand larceny, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department said someone stole a Kioti tractor with a front end loader from a Chesnee farm sometime between Nov. 22 and Dec. 24.
The theft was discovered Christmas Eve when the victim found the lock cut off the gate on his Kegtown Mill Road property. The Kioti model 65 tractor is valued at about $40,000.
Shot fired
A Gastonia woman was arrested Christmas Day after she allegedly fired a shot from a handgun during a verbal dispute outside Granard Court Apartments, according to Gaffney Police.
The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when Barbara Rhyne, 42, of West Davidson Ave., Gastonia, was allegedly engaged in an argument with a Gaffney woman.
Rhyne's sister allegedly was trying to pull her away from the argument but when Ryhne got near her vehicle, she reportedly pulled a small handgun from her pocket and fired a shot. The alleged victim claimed the shot was fired in her direction, while Rhyne's sister told police the shot was fired in the air.
Police said they recovered both the handgun and a spent shell casing from inside Rhyne's car.
Computer taken
The Cherokee County Sheriff's office is investigating the break-in of a Blacksburg home that occurred sometime between 10 p.m. on Christmas and 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
Forced entry was made to the home on Bolin Road through a back door. A Compaq computer and a DVD player valued at about $760 were stolen.
