SERT simulates armed robbery in Blacksburg
By TARA JENNINGS Ledger Staff Writer tara@gaffneyledger.com

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Emergency Response Team (SERT) simulated an armed robbery Wednesday in Blacksburg.

The Sheriff's mobile command post was set up at Mt. Paran Church off Highway 198 in Blacksburg, while members of SERT searched the adjacent wooded area with help from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Bloodhound Tracking Team. Medics trained in tactical operations from Upstate Carolina Medical Center assisted in the operation.

SERT members located the suspects, who shot at officers during the pursuit, inside a building, allowing the deputies to train in building entry as well.

"The training went well," said Chief Deputy Joel Hill of the sheriff's office. "We do this to familiarize ourselves with what we do with each situation."

Training is held monthly.

SERT responds to high-risk situations such as hostage and suspect barricade situations. They also serve high-risk warrants and assist in search and rescue operations.

There are 12 deputies on the SERT team along with support officers.
