Dancing not OK

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Beaufort High School students are having to do a fast two-step away from a rule that allowed students to take dance instead of physical education.

The state passed a law in 1995 closing that loophole, but the information never got to the district, which kept letting students glide across the ballroom instead of throwing a ball around.

Anyone who already has a diploma is safe, said Bill Evans, program director for the Beaufort County School District.

But rising seniors who already took dance thinking it would cover them are having to go back to summer school and take a three week PE course on team sports, Beaufort High School Principal Dan Durbin said.

Brooke Cansler may end up in that class and she's not happy.

''I'm like a girly girl,'' she said. ''I don't like playing basketball and all that stuff because I like to dance. That's my favorite thing to do.''
