200 enrolled in summer school
By SCOTT POWELL Ledger Staff Writer spowell@gaffneyledger.com

About 200 high school students had a short break before returning to school for the summer.

Just days after school dismissed last week, some Gaffney High and Blacksburg High students started summer school classes Wednesday, which will continue until July 26. Summer school runs Monday through Thursday with a brief Fourth of July holiday.

Students can take English or math at Gaffney High School at a cost is $175 per course.

Students must earn 120 hours in summer school to receive high school credit. Classes are being offered for credit in English I, II and III, Math for the Technologies I and II and Algebra I.

"Students can take one class in summer school," Gaffney High Summer School Director Thomas Goforth said. "This gives the students an opportunity to go ahead and earn credits in English or math so they can move to the next grade level."

Unlike previous years, Goforth said no driver's education course is being offered this summer due to limited demand from students. Only six students had signed up for driver's education as of Tuesday's deadline for summer school registration.

The school district has used its Virtual School program to help high school students recover credits in English and math needed for graduation. The online courses are taught through the APEX Learning Academic Curriculum, which provides state standards-based classes.
