LETTER First of all, I would like to say thank you so very much to those who sent donations to Saving Gaffney Pets Animal Rescue. We received a total of $435 and for that I am very thankful. This was, of course, very helpful but as you might have guessed, more is needed to accomplish what needs to be done. I personally brought to my house last week seven little Boxer-mix puppies that had been turned in to the shelter as an owner release. Owner releases can be euthanized immediately, especially if the shelter is full of animals. I am of the opinion that puppies need a chance at life so puppies, of course, are always my first priority. These puppies were in pretty rough shape. Whomever brought them in had tried to dock the tails themselves with a sharp instrument of some sort and did not do a very good job of it. One of the pups' little tail had been cut off almost to the rear end and, of course, got very infected. These babies have been on major antibiotics (three of the seven) and have to be kept that way. They are doing much better now and have already been spoken for by a rescue in New York so they will be going up north in the very near future to a much better life than the way they started. This has been a tremendous expense to me and your help is still very much needed. Seven puppies can eat quite a bit and when it comes to the puppies, I do not scrimp on food. On Friday, June 15, I sent 14 adult dogs that came out of the shelter to Pet Rescue New York on a van owned by my volunteer. Thankfully we did not have to rent a van and this helped tremendously. The cost of the gas to New York and back was $252, which the receiving shelter gladly reimbursed. The dogs went to New York completely vetted with shots, spay/neuter, etc., which the New York rescue also paid. The only real time I had in these dogs is going to the shelter and picking which ones the New York rescue would take, taking pictures and posting them on the Internet for the New York rescue to decide which ones they want, which is usually almost all of them. I then have to take the dogs to the vet and once they are vetted and the transport is arranged, getting them on the van on their way up north to a better life. This is very, very time-consuming but worth it, especially when I receive wonderful emails about the great dogs they get from the South and the fantastic e-mails telling the great stories about their adoptive homes and how much they love their new families. In between all of this animal stuff, I do try to work at my full-time sales job traveling three states. On Thursday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, I spent the time at the play at the Gaffney Little Theatre as the dog handler for the wonderful play The Miracle Worker, with a donation container in the lobby to collect money for my rescue efforts. I netted a grand total of $7 for the three performances. Saturday afternoon I spent the afternoon at a fundraiser for another local organization in town trying to raise money for my rescue and netted nothing. On Monday afternoon, after working a full day, I met another rescue organization from Atlanta at the shelter for them to get six Collie-mix puppies, one Terrier-mix puppy and one momma cat and six kittens which will eventually go to New Jersey to better lives. Monday evening, my volunteer and I were at the shelter getting 11 puppies out of the shelter to a foster home so they can at least have a chance at life. The shelter was to full capacity Monday evening and today, Tuesday, June 19, there were 20 dogs and other puppies euthanized and 16 cats and kittens I just could not find the time or the extra help to get them out of the shelter. I go to bed each night telling myself, "You can't save them all," but even knowing this, it makes for a very restless night. With help, more could be accomplished. Since Saving Gaffney Pets Animals rescue is the ONLY rescue organization in Gaffney trying to save animals in the Cherokee County Consolidated Shelter, we could always use volunteers to foster dogs, take dogs to the vet, or even go to the shelter and walk dogs so they don't have to spend their last days completely on concrete, not ever knowing that somebody cared enough about them to at least show them a little bit of love and affection. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help me to help them, not only with your donations but with your time, If you would like to foster a dog until we could at least attempt to place it in a home, that would help. If someone could go to the shelter even on their lunch hour and walk one or two, the exercise would do you both good. It saddens me that the Humane Society of Cherokee County nor Project Zero will not do anything at all to help the animals in Cherokee County, but they have their own agendas. Whatever those are, I wish them success, but because of that, more animals are dying daily. If you could help in anyway, please feel free to call me at (864) 489-9901. I WILL RETURN YOUR PHONE CALL. You may also call the Cherokee County Consolidated Shelter at (864) 487-8529 and leave me a message and I WILL RETURN YOUR CALL.
Thank you in advance for anything you might be able to do to help me. |
