Gaffney High JROTC Cadet Lee Sanders (front) stands at attention while his flight leader conducts an inspection at last week's summer leadership school at The Citadel.
Gaffney High JROTC cadets got a close look at the military college lifestyle while spending a week at The Citadel.

After early morning calisthenics, students had a few minutes to wash and get their rooms ready for daily inspections. This was followed by days filled with academic classes, military drills, and a spirited volleyball competition in the evening hours. A cadet's day runs from 5:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m.

Gaffney High sent 10 cadets to The Citadel summer leadership camp June 11-16. There were cadets from 21 schools spanning the globe from Alabama to Singapore.

Field trips were taken to Fort Moultrie in Charleston. Another day was spent visiting The Citadel Military History Museum and Chapel.

The week culminated with a parade in full JROTC dress on the parade grounds at The Citadel.

"The Citadel camp gives the cadets a real idea of the military college lifestyle. There is a lot of emphasis on academics and military drills," Lt. Col. Morris Miller said. "It's a good experience for the students. They get to develop their leadership skills while getting to know students from other parts of the country."

Many of the JROTC instructors graduated from The Citadel and return with their cadets to attend the summer leadership school each year.

"The JROTC unit from Singapore is involved in an exchange program," Miller said. "They did a slide presentation Friday and did a demonstration on how they do things over in Singapore."

Gaffney High JROTC cadet Laura Simmerson was a cadre member. She was one of the senior students involved in overseeing camp activities.

Several Gaffney High JROTC cadets were recognized for their performance at Fort Jackson.

Nicholas Roberts and James Belue were honor graduates. Louis Durant received an award for outstanding room inspection. Charlie Bishop was a member of the honor flight.
