STAFF REPORTS

Gaffney's Lana Ward was selected to play in the prestigious Queen of Diamonds Showcase Tournament.
Gaffney Lady Indian softball player, Lana Ward, was recently selected to play in the prestigious Queen of Diamonds South Showcase (QDSS) Tournament held at Winthrop University on Sept 1-2.

Applicants for this showcase go through a long rigorous selection process before being accepted to play in this event.

Only 252 athletes are selected from 1,300-plus applications from all over the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and New Zealand.

Application profiles are posted online for coaches to review, and over 200 college coaches were in attendance for the weekend event.

The teams are randomly selected from the pool of selected athletes and each team plays four games over the course of the weekend. Players are assigned a position during the selection process and play that position for the entire tournament.

Ward, who plays third base for the Palmetto Wildfire travel team, was selected to play outfield in the QDSS.

Ward finished with a .375 batting average and a .667 on base percentage and one stolen base. Her team finished the tournament with a 2-1-1 record.
