Landfill proposal nixed by committee There won't be another spot for county residents and local contractors to dump construction debris after all. Cherokee County Council Public Works Committee Chairman Bailey Humphries said the county has no interest in giving the green light to Charlotte-based MRR Southern to build and operate a C&D landfill here. Officials with the company met Thursday with the public works committee. Humphries said the company wants to build a C&D landfill here because North Carolina has imposed a moratorium on the permitting of new landfills. "We just wanted to protect the interests of our own residents," Humphries said. "They said they would be able to fill (the landfill) up in seven years and we don't want that." Humphries added the county's solid waste plan doesn't allow for additional landfill capacity. Only construction debris, such as bricks and mortar, can be dumped in a C&D landfill. The county currently operates its own C&D landfill near its solid waste landfill site. |
