Fox names Testaverde starter vs. Saints CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - For weeks, Carolina Panthers coach John Fox has been careful not to name a No. 1 quarterback, saying the decision to use Vinny Testaverde or David Carr would be based on their health. After both players practiced on Wednesday, Fox made it clear: He's going with the 44-year-old. ''Right now, if everybody is healthy, Vinny will be the starter,'' Fox said. While not unexpected, the move is an indictment on Carr, who the Panthers signed to a two-year, $6 million deal in the offseason to back up Jake Delhomme. Since Delhomme was lost to a season-ending right elbow injury in Week 3, Carr has sustained two concussions and a back injury. But when he's played, he's been ineffective, struggling to find receivers and appearing skittish in the pocket. It led Fox to go with Testaverde, who was out of the league until Carolina signed him in Week 6 after Carr was first injured with a concussion the following week against Tennessee. Carr said he felt as good as he has in months during Wednesday's practice, but Fox still decided to go with the old guy. Cowboys, Packers move to 10-1, face off next week in Dallas Tony Romo took a few minutes before the Dallas Cowboys' traditional Thanksgiving Day game to watch Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers on television. Next week, Romo will only have to look across the field to see one of his childhood heroes. And the quarterback who grew up in Wisconsin will be trying to beat the team he still cheers on for the outright NFC lead. With their methodical 34-3 holiday victory over the New York Jets, the Cowboys improved to 10-1 for the first time in team history. Romo led the Cowboys on a gameopening touchdown drive, then later threw scoring passes to Witten and Terrell Owens, the second a 22- yarder with 6:12 left in the game. That gave Romo 29 TDs, matching Danny White's single-season team record with five games still to play. Romo finished 21-of-28 for 195 yards. The win kept them even with Green Bay, which beat Detroit 37-26 earlier in the day. Favre set a franchise record with 20 consecutive completions and finished with a season-high 381 yards and three touchdowns in the Packers' Thanksgiving Day victory over the slumping Lions. 'The three-time MVP put together another sensational performance that made the 38-year-old Favre look as if he's back in his prime. His seventh 300-yard game of the season matched a team mark he set 12 years ago. Green Bay (10-1) matched its best 11-game record since 1929 and the NFC North leaders took a four-game lead with five games left in the regular season. The two teams finally get a chance to see who is the conference's best team Thursday in Dallas. It'll be a fun game next week. Obviously it's important in the NFC,'' Romo said. ''Anytime you play in a big game, it's enjoyable. The fact it's the Packers is exciting for me. ... I still root them on, although slowly I'm starting to root against them.'' |
