Despite poor foul shooting and too many turnovers, the Gaffney Indians were still good enough to beat visiting York 60-57 on Friday.

Gaffney made just 18 of its 38 free throws and committed 28 turnovers, including 10 in the fourth quarter. The turnovers helped York rally from a 13-point deficit at the end of the third quarter to make a game of it late.

York's Drew Harper hit a three-pointer and Courtney Love made back-to-back baskets to pull York within 59-54 with :35 left.

On Gaffney's next possession, Emison Hughes made one of two free throws to push the lead to four. After Love misfired on a three-pointer, Hughes left the door open for York with two misses at the foul line with :15 remaining.

The Cougars made a three-pointer with time winding down to close to 60-57, but left no time to put the Indians back on the foul line.

Jeff Brown sparked the Indians off the bench, scoring 13 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Brown was among several players who recently joined the team after the conclusion of the football season.

Gaffney coach Mark Huff traced the poor shooting and sloppy play to the players' transition from football to basketball.

"It was an example of seven of our players who have been at practice for only four days," Huff said. "It just takes a while to get the football out of them and to get a little finesse."

Gaffney, whose tallest player is 6-2, was outrebounded 42-39.

"We didn't do a good job on the defensive boards," Huff said. "We have to block out."

Josh Corry paced the Indians with 16 points. He made two straight hoops to give the Indians a 41-30 cushion with five minutes left in the third quarter. Ty Dawkins extended that lead to 48-35 with a three-pointer to end the third quarter.

Dawkins had a three-pointer and free throw in the second quarter to help the Indians turn a 2-point deficit at the end of the first quarter to an 11-point cushion at halftime.

Gaffney, 1-0, hosts Rock Hill on Tuesday. Tip off is slated for 8 p.m.
