Carolina football player stabbed in neck COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A University of South Carolina football player was recovering Sunday after his neck was slashed during a weekend altercation near the school campus, according to several reports. Jordin Lindsey, a defensive end for the Gamecocks who could not play this past season because of a low gradepoint average, was cut early Saturday morning by a man wielding a sharp object, possibly a broken bottle, according to a police report. His father, Billy Lindsey, told The (Columbia) State newspaper in a report posted online Sunday that his son lost a lot of blood and needed surgery, but that he was to be released from a local hospital later Sunday. Jordin Lindsey also was cut on his face during the attack, Columbia television station WLTX reported. The elder Lindsey said Jordin Lindsey and twin brother, Dustin, also a Gamecocks player, were walking early Saturday morning in Five Points, a neighborhood known for its college bar scene and restaurants. Two men yelled at the brothers from across a street, but the twins didn't think much about it - until they heard footsteps and Jordin Lindsey was stabbed, Billy Lindsey said. According to the police report, Jordin Lindsey was fighting with one of the two suspects when his neck was cut. Dustin Lindsey drove his injured brother to the home of quarterback Blake Mitchell and linebacker Cody Wells, and an ambulance was called. A phone listing for Billy Lindsey in Mobile, Ala., rang unanswered Sunday, as did an after-hours phone number for the Gamecocks athletic department. Columbia police spokesman Brick Lewis said authorities were searching for the suspects. ''Obviously we're looking for anybody's help in this - anybody who might have witnessed it,'' he said. Jordin Lindsey took this past year as a redshirt season and retained one year of playing eligibility. The 6-foot-3, 256-pound senior had started 15 of 25 games the previous two years. He was the starter for South Carolina's final five games in 2006 and recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in the Liberty Bowl against Houston. |
