Thief targets 95-year-old woman A 95-year-old Gaffney woman's purse was snatched from her on Wednesday by a man who made his getaway on a bicycle, according to Gaffney Police. The woman was in her car in a South Granard Street restaurant's parking lot when the thief, described as a black male, approximately 35 to 45-years old and slightly balding, reached into the woman's car, grabbing her and then grabbing her purse. He then fled away on a bicycle, police said. The woman lost about $40 in cash, her driver's license and a credit card. Garage burglarized A Cherokee Avenue garage was broken into sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning and a thief or thieves walked away with about $370 in tools, change and car batteries. Among the items taken from Hopper's Automotives were a socket set and a torque wrench, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. The burglar broke a window to get inside, causing an estimated $150 in property damage. Guns stolen Four guns, a jar of change and Christmas presents were stolen from a Stateline Road home on Wednesday, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. An unknown subject broke into the residence by tossing a brick through a sliding glass door, causing an estimated $800 in property damage. The thief or thieves then stole, among other items, a 20-gauge shotgun of unknown make, a .22-caliber Marlin rifle, a 30-30 Marlin rifle, and a .38 caliber pistol of unknown make. Theft losses were estimated at about $2,120. Identity stolen A Gaffney woman learned upon signing up for satellite television service this week that someone had already used her identity to rack up about $1,400 in television and phone bills. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office reported the woman's identity apparently was stolen sometime between Aug. 6, 2006 and Jan. 8, 2007. The theft wasn't discovered until the woman tried to get television service for her Sarratt Avenue home. The services acquired under the woman's stolen identity were obtained for a Marietta Road home. Grey Goose stolen Gaffney Police are investigating the burglary of a Mill Street liquor store during which an unknown burglar stole nothing but two bottles of Grey Goose vodka. The break-in at Carroll's Liquor occurred sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning. A large rock was used to break the glass of the front door, police said. Thief tows trailer A 53-foot long refrigerated trailer awaiting repairs was stolen from a Hyatt Street parking lot, according to Gaffney Police. The 2001 Utility trailer owned by Professional Trucking of Stone Mountain, Ga. was taken from the Pilot Travel Center sometime between Dec. 8 and Dec. 12. The trailer, which was empty, is valued at about $25,000. Copper stolen The owner of a Willow Street apartment reported to police a burglar broke into the basement of the currently vacant home and stole copper electrical wires and pipes. Gaffney Police said the thefts occurred sometime between Dec. 5 and Dec. 8. The thief or thieves gained access to the home, located in the 600 block of Willow Street, by breaking open a basement door. There was no entry to the living areas of the home. Pit Bulls stolen Gaffney Police are on the lookout for four pit bull puppies reported stolen from a Marion Avenue residence. Three black and white pit bulls and a brown and white pit bull were stolen from the 400 block sometime between 10:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday, victim Lanny Phillips told police. The dogs are valued at about $800. Home burglarized The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the burglary of a Hicks Grove Road home that was broken into sometime last Friday. Forced entry was made through a rear door, according to a police report, and the thief or thieves made off with $3,500 in electronics, $1,840 in currency, a $200 microwave, a $300 safe, a firearm valued at $200 and $300 in jewelry. Door damage is estimated at $150. |
