Irvin and ASU look to make history
Mountaineers try for unprecendented third national crown

BRETT IRVIN
Former Gaffney High standout Brett Irvin and his Appalachian State teammates will be looking to make history tonight when they try for an unprecedented third consecutive title.

The Mountaineers (12-2) meet Delaware (11- 3) in Chattanooga in the Football Championship Subdivision Final. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 at 8 p.m.

Unlike last year when he strolled the sidelines as a redshirt, Irvin has been an integral part of the Mountaineers' success this season.

He started at center when the Mountaineers shocked the college football world by knocking off Division I superpower Michigan in the season opener. He started several more games at center before becoming part of a three-man rotation at guard in the team's eighth game.

Irvin said he's not surprised the Mountaineers have returned to the national championship game. "I knew in the beginning of the season that we had a great football team," Irvin said. "When we beat Michigan, I knew it was going to be hard for anyone to stop us."

The Mountaineers have recovered and refocused from a couple of conference losses to win seven games in a row. The Mountaineers, who have won 11 consecutive playoff games, used a record-setting performance from sophomore quarterback Armanti Edwards to knock off Richmond last Friday, 55-35. Edwards ran for 313 yards - a playoff record for quarterbacks. He also completed 14 of 16 passes for 182 yards and three scores.

Irvin isn't taking Delaware for granted.

"Delaware has a good football team," he said. "I have been watching a lot of film this week. It's going to be a good game. No one has ever won three national championships in a row. Hopefully, we can come out on top."

Irvin will have family and friends at the game tonight.

"It will be a fun environment to play in," he said.

Irvin plans to return to Gaffney after the game. He'll take a month off before beginning the team's off-season weight and conditioning program.
