Christmas came a bit early for 140 Cherokee County children Saturday when they went on $100 shopping sprees at Wal Mart, courtesy of "Christmas is for Kids."
The kids were selected based on financial need by staff members of the Department of Social Services, Disabilities and Special Needs, Department of Mental Health and the Cherokee County School District's Parents of Preschoolers program.
Members of the Sub Debs and staff from the above-named organizations helped the families with their shopping Saturday morning at Wal-Mart.
"Through the generosity of the people of this great county, we were able to pay for $13,927.89 worth of toys and clothes for these children," said Cody Sossamon, publisher of The Gaffney Ledger, which has sponsored the event annually since 1989. "I wish I could appropriately convey the gratitude these children and their parents expressed.
"We could not have done it without the support of the community and especially the girls of Sub Deb and staff members who volunteered to help Saturday. I also want to express thanks to the associates at Wal-Mart who were patient and cheerful throughout the long morning," Sossamon added.
Seven children who had been chosen were unable to attend because of family emergencies and will be allowed to shop later this week, Sossamon said. There were also many who had sought help but had to be put on a waiting list.
"It's not too late to make donations as we will continue to help children as long as the money comes in," Sossamon said.
