Church news

Bethany Baptist Church will have its fifth Sunday singing Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. Individuals and ensembles within the church will bring special music. There will also be congregational singing. A community-wide fellowship will be begin at 6 that evening. Chicken stew and desserts will be served at no charge. Everyone is invited to attend this "get-to-know-yourneighbor" time of fellowship. Notices

The Cherokee County Public Library will observe special hours for the New Year holiday. Both locations, Gaffney and Blacksburg, will close at 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, and will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 1. Regular hours will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

New Year's programs

Watch Night services for Ebenezer Baptist, Dunton United Methodist, Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion and Allen Temple C.M.E. churches will be held Monday, Dec. 31, at 10:30 p.m. at Dunton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Freddy Davidson, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, will deliver the message. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be served.

Limestone Missionary Baptist Church will have its annual Watch Night service Monday, Dec. 31, at 10:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Michael Bridges, pastor of Concord Baptist Church. Rev. Bridges will be accompanied by his choir and congregation.

Friendship Baptist Church of Spartanburg and First Baptist Church of Fairforest will have a combined Watch Night Service at Friendship Baptist on Monday, Dec. 31. The Rev. W. Irvin Jenkins, pastor of First Baptist of Fairforest, will be the speaker. The service begins at 10 p.m. with praise and worship by the combined music ministries of the churches. Public invited.

Special programs

The Cherokee County American Red Cross will conduct the following health and safety courses in January: Jan. 7-8, 6-10 p.m., CPR with first aid courses, $49 fee; Jan. 14, 6:30-7:30 p.m, Blood Borne Pathogens, $10 fee; Jan. 19, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Child and Adult CPR, $42 fee; Jan. 26, 8 a.m.-2 p.m, Babysitters Training with ARC first aid kit $40 fee. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required. All courses will be at the ARC office, 405 N. Limestone St. To register call 489-6066.

Support groups

Leann Thompson, Director of Medical and Community Projects for the National Kidney Foundation of South Carolina, will be special guest speaker at the next Cherokee County Diabetes Support Group meeting on Monday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney. Anyone who has diabetes or anyone who is a caregiver for someone with the disease is encouraged to attend this informative community outreach program. AA meetings are held at 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the building behind Limestone Methodist Church on Carlisle Street. If you have a problem with alcohol, you are welcome to attend.
