Mayor Henry Jolly The gateway projects include erecting eye-catching welcome signs and landscaping upgrades at Interstate 85 interchanges 92 and 96. Mayor Henry Jolly After successfully completing a series of park beautification projects last year, the city will turn its direction to signage projects in 2008.

Beginning the interchange gateway projects is a top priority for the city this year, Gaffney Mayor Henry Jolly said. The gateway projects include erecting eye-catching welcome signs and landscaping upgrades at Interstate 85 interchanges 92 and 96.

The mayor also wants the city to erect signs to direct visitors to the city's downtown historic district.

The transformation of the old post office into the city's new visitors and visual arts center is another to-do item this year, according to the mayor. The city finalized the purchase of the former post office last summer and has hired an architectural firm to redesign the building.

Jolly hopes that 2008 will be the year that another cultural enhancement project comes to fruition with the renovation of the former Brown's Furniture building into the city's new cultural arts center.

Some of the other projects Gaffney City Council hopes to begin or complete in 2008 include:

* Implementing the Clemson University downtown study and offer incentives to merchants to restore their facades;

* Assisting the county in its efforts to build an airport;

* Assisting the Cherokee County Recreation District in building a soccer complex at Lake Whelchel;

* Continuing efforts to beautify city parks.

"We just want to continue to improve the quality of life for the greater Gaffney community," Jolly said.
